Question 1

1. How do I calculate how much paver base I need?

Accepted Answer

Measure the length and width of your project to find the total square footage, then multiply the area by the desired base depth. Divide the result by 12 to get cubic feet, or by 324 to get cubic yards when using square feet and inches.

Question 2

2. How many pavers for a 10x10 area?

Accepted Answer

A 10 × 10-foot area covers 100 square feet. If you use 12 × 12-inch pavers, you’ll need 100 pavers, plus an extra 5–10% to allow for cuts and breakage.

Question 3

3. How much base to put under pavers?

Accepted Answer

For a typical patio or walkway, use 4–6 inches of compacted crushed gravel topped with a 1-inch bedding sand layer. Driveways generally need a deeper gravel base to support vehicle weight.

Question 4

4. How much paver base do I need for a 12x12 patio?

Accepted Answer

A 12 × 12-foot patio covers 144 square feet and needs approximately 2.1–3.2 cubic yards of gravel for a 4–6-inch compacted base, including a 20% allowance. You’ll also need about 0.44 cubic yard of sand for a 1-inch bedding layer.

Question 5

5. How many pavers per sqft?

Accepted Answer

The number depends on the paver size: 12 × 12-inch pavers require about 1 per square foot, while 6 × 6-inch pavers require 4. For accurate estimates, divide 144 by the paver’s length multiplied by its width in inches.

Question 6

6. How to install 12x12 pavers?

Accepted Answer

Excavate the area, compact the soil, add and compact a 4–6-inch gravel base in layers, then screed a 1-inch bedding sand layer. Set the pavers evenly, install edge restraints, fill the joints with suitable sand, and finish according to the paver manufacturer’s instructions.
